Beach Replenishment in Beach Haven

September on Long Beach Island isn’t just characterized by the departure of vacationers and a quieter atmosphere; it also marks the beginning of the next phase of beach replenishment south of the Causeway.
Long Beach Island is gearing up for its next phase of beach replenishment. The 2024 Beach Haven Beach Replenishment is a federally funded project aimed at expanding the island’s beaches and enhancing the protection offered by the wide shores and sand dunes to homes and residents. This effort builds on the initial beach replenishment work that began over a decade ago, providing what could be considered a “tune-up” for the area. While many of LBI’s beaches remain wide, some, particularly in Beach Haven’s southern end, need to be restored to their former width.
Beach Haven Beach Replenishment 2024 Schedule timeline may have changed, here’s a general outline of the Beach Haven beach replenishment process for 2024. Equipment mobilization is slated to begin the week of September 9th at a staging area south of Nelson Ave, with sand pumping operations kicking off during the first week of October. The project is expected to be finished by December 1st. Replenishment will proceed at a pace of 200-300 feet per day, running continuously 24/7. A 1,000-foot section of the beach will be sectioned off, with crew members on-site to enforce safety guidelines. Access to this area is strictly prohibited, and bystanders must stay at least 200 feet away from the work zone. Homes close to the beach will hear the backup alarms from the heavy machinery. Due to the project, Beach Buggy access may be limited, and dune benches from specific streets will be placed in storage to avoid damage. These benches will be returned in the spring.
Long-Term Benefits for Beach Haven Though the beach replenishment project may cause short-term disruptions, the long-term advantages are substantial. Expanded beaches and reinforced dune systems provide better protection against storms, which is crucial for maintaining property values and ensuring the safety of residents on Long Beach Island. As a barrier island, LBI is vulnerable to extreme weather, and projects like these significantly benefit the local economy and real estate market.
